How It All Started
The Lava Foundation was born from a simple but powerful belief: every person—every child, every adult, every family—deserves a pathway to a safer, stronger, more hopeful future. That belief took root in 2011, when Mrs. Joi Harris founded The Lava Foundation in Wisconsin. At the time, she was a daycare owner who saw firsthand how deeply families needed support, encouragement, and genuine care. She created the name “Lava” as an acronym for Living, Achieving, Valuing, and Appreciating one another—a reflection of the compassion and mutual respect she wanted to cultivate in her community.
What began as a small effort to support youth and families quickly grew into something larger. Mrs. Harris noticed the gaps—children without proper clothing, families without essential items, seniors struggling in silence, and youth searching for guidance. Instead of accepting those gaps as permanent, she chose to build bridges. She gathered surplus shoes, outerwear, and necessities and distributed them to families in need. Through these acts of service, she formed meaningful connections with youth, families, and seniors, planting the seeds of a movement grounded in compassion and empowerment.
In 2017, The Lava Foundation relocated its operations to Illinois, carrying its mission forward with even greater purpose. Over the years, the foundation has evolved, but its heart has remained the same: to stand with the community, not above it; to uplift, not judge; to empower, not replace. We believe transformation happens when people feel seen, supported, and equipped with the tools to grow.
Today, The Lava Foundation’s work spans youth empowerment, adult support, family stability, and community strengthening. We focus on education, mentorship, practical resources, and compassionate guidance—because real change happens when people have both knowledge and support behind them.
Our vision is bold but deeply grounded: a community where every person has the opportunity to learn, grow, and transform their future—no matter where they begin.
We are building a future where:
-
Youth discover their potential,
-
Adults reclaim their confidence,
-
Families find stability, and
-
Communities rise together.
A future shaped by empowerment, strengthened by compassion, and sustained by collective hope.
This is our story. This is our vision. This is The Lava Foundation—empowering futures, one pathway at a time.
